Today Breaking News: Is the US State Department Becoming More Careful While Commenting on India?

The US State Department, which is their foreign office, has the impulsive habit of commenting on matters related to India’s internal affairs more often than they should. However, today breaking news shows there seems to be a slight departure from that habit off late. A State Department spokesperson yesterday refused to comment on a Pakistani journalist’s question on the Indian government’s refusal to renew the visa of an Australian journalist.

A few days ago, another US State Department spokesperson refused to comment on the same Pakistani journalist’s question about his allegations of “extra-judicial killings” by India of terrorists in Pakistan.

There were other instances where the state department spokesperson refused to answer controversial questions by Pakistani journalists about India as per latest Hindi news.

This is not to say that there has never been any rejection of controversial questions from Pakistani and other journalists by state department spokespersons in the past.

Hence, it is still early days to conclude that the approach of the US State Department has undergone a change with regard to the internal matters of India. They might reduce the frequency of controversial statements in relation to India’s internal affairs but they are not going to stop doing it altogether.

India’s position in the global order has become stronger

The US state department realizes that India’s position in the global multilateral order has changed drastically and Indian policymakers are now aware of the strength of their nation.

Looking back at reports of today breaking news dating back to 2014 or earlier, it is easy to see that India was punching way below its weight under successive governments.

Ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP]-led National Democratic Alliance [NDA] came to power with absolute majority in 2014, India has shown that it is in a hurry to make up for the lost years under earlier governments.

Be it domestic policy, defence policy, economic policy or foreign policy, the BJP-led NDA government headed by Mr. Narendra Modi has completely altered the way India has chosen to grow.

The unprecedented success achieved by this government in all these spheres has given it the confidence to stand firm against any kind of pressure from the US as per latest Hindi news.

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar sets the diplomatic tone

To the credit of Prime Minister Modi, he has chosen his team of ministers very carefully. One of those choices was that of Subramaniam Jaishankar as the foreign minister soon after he retired as the foreign secretary as per today breaking news reports.

Ever since he took charge of the foreign office Mr. Jaishankar has redefined its scope and dimension by leveraging the nation’s latent and growing strength and capacities that earlier governments didn’t know how to utilize.

Within the span of a couple of years after Mr. Jaishankar became the foreign minister, the world began to see the side of India that nobody had ever seen before.

The latest Hindi news clearly shows that India is now conducting its foreign policy at a different level where the rest of the world including the US acknowledges India as a major global player.

At the same time, India is not in the business of mindless confrontation against US and has shown the required level of political maturity to handle specific issues within their specific ambits.

Indo-US cooperation doesn’t mean India is a US ally

The US is used to dominating every relationship it gets into with any country and this approach reflects what former US president George W Bush once said, “…It’s either my way…or the highway.”

If you go by today breaking news reports of that period when Bush made this statement, it is easy to see that he was speaking as the head of a country that was the sole superpower of the world. He was in that comfort zone to make a loaded statement like that, but those days are gone now.

It’s a multi-polar world now and the power and prestige of the US is on shaky ground. They are still the greatest military power on the planet but unnecessary wars of attrition in Afghanistan and Iraq has severely strained the financial capacity of the US to wage war as easily as it used to do earlier.

The war in Ukraine has been a disaster for the US as its ally Ukraine, is losing territory and the war as a whole against Russia faster than what US war planners may have thought.

The rise of China in the Asia Pacific region as a hostile power with sinister ambitions of global dominance much like the US itself, is another challenge that it needs to tackle. Thankfully for the US, India and China are at loggerheads over the Indo-Tibetan boundary issue, which has acquired a larger confrontational dimension on the sea. Understandably, the US wants to take advantage of this confrontation between India and China and hence is “Going easy” on India to use the words of a former US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger. Indian on its part is using this opportunity as best as it could and is narrowing the geopolitical power gap it has with the US, which has no choice but to accept India’s independent foreign policy.
